World Breastfeeding Week Activities Launch in Eastern Cape

On 4 August 2026, the National Department of Health, Eastern Cape Provincial Health Department, WHO and UNICEF hosted community breastfeeding activities in Engcobo, Chris Hani District Municipality, Eastern Cape, bringing together pregnant women, mothers, families and healthcare workers to promote breastfeeding and build stronger community support systems.

The Department of Health emphasised that breastfeeding is a shared responsibility. Government, employers, families, communities and healthcare workers all have roles to play in creating environments that enable women to breastfeed successfully. Similar events were held across other provinces throughout August.

What support is available

Breastfeeding support groups, peer counsellors and clinic-based advice are available nationwide. Many clinics have dedicated baby-friendly spaces where mothers can feed comfortably and receive guidance from trained staff.

What you can do

Breastfeeding does not always come easily. If you are struggling with latching, pain, concerns about milk supply, or need support returning to work, speak to your clinic sister or find a local breastfeeding support group. You do not need to manage alone.
