The Weight Loss Lies Holding Us Back. And Seven Things That Actually Work
You do not need expensive products or gym memberships. Better health starts with simple affordable changes.

Health is not a dress size.
Weight management in South Africa is complicated. With busy workdays, high food prices, and family demands, looking after our bodies can feel overwhelming. Many women try extreme diets, only to gain back every kilogram.
The truth is managing weight is not about expensive gym memberships or fancy superfoods.
Myths we need to bust first
- Myth 1. You must buy expensive diet foods. Plain traditional whole foods like beans, lentils, eggs, and cabbage are far healthier and cheaper than processed fat-free packaged snacks.
- Myth 2. Sweating out kilograms in a gym is required. Daily movement like brisk walking, dancing, or active chores burns energy just as effectively for weight health.
- Myth 3. Starving yourself works. Skipping meals slows down your metabolism, making your body cling to fat and leading to overeating later.
- Seven things every woman can do. Zero budget required.
- Balance starch and swap processed meats. Keep starch like pap, rice, or bread to a quarter of your plate instead of the main portion. Swap processed meats like viennas, polony, and russians which are packed with hidden salt and unhealthy fats for eggs, canned pilchards, beans, or chicken.
- Cut down on fast food and fried foods. Takeaways, vetkoek, fried chips, and street food are loaded with cheap oils and high calories that cause weight gain and inflammation. Cooking simple meals at home using boiling, steaming, or light grilling saves money and protects your heart.
- Walk 30 minutes daily. And keep up the pace. You do not need a gym. However your walking pace matters. A casual stroll is great for mental peace, but a brisk purposeful walk where you walk fast enough that talking is possible but singing would be tough gets your heart rate into the calorie-burning zone and boosts your metabolism.
- Drink water before every meal. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger. Drinking a large glass of plain water 15 minutes before meals improves digestion, prevents overeating, and costs nothing.
- Cut out hidden sugars. Fizzy drinks, sweetened fruit juices, and excess sugar in tea or coffee add hundreds of empty calories daily. Replacing them with plain water or unsweetened tea makes a massive difference within weeks.
- Prioritise seven hours of sleep. When you are short on sleep your body produces stress hormones that trigger cravings for high-sugar and fatty foods. Good rest is a completely free health tool.
- Fill half your plate with vegetables. Spinach, cabbage, carrots, and tomatoes add volume and fibre to your meals, keeping you full for longer without adding extra calories.
