Celebrating Women's Month: 70 Years of Strength and Putting Your Health First
We honour the women who marched in 1956. Today we march for our own health too.
This year marks 70 years since 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in 1956. Their courage changed South Africa. Today women still keep our homes, workplaces, and communities running. But while taking care of everyone else, it is easy to ignore your own body.
Many women push through pain or skip doctor and clinic visits to save time and money for the family. We are taught to be tough. But being strong should not mean suffering in silence. Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is necessary.
Here are five ways to honour your health today.
- Do your annual screenings. Get regular checks for blood pressure, diabetes, Pap smears, and HIV to catch issues early.
- Know your family history. Ask relatives about conditions like heart disease or cancer so you can protect yourself and your children.
- Trust healthcare workers. Local nurses and doctors are there to help you without judgment.
- Find support. Join walking groups, running clubs, gym, yoga groups, and circles where you can talk openly about wellness.
- Give yourself permission to rest. Eat well, drink water, and seek medical help whenever you feel something is wrong.
Where to get help
Visit your nearest public clinic for free basic health checks including blood pressure, blood sugar, and cervical screening. Bring your ID. No appointment is needed at most facilities.
